Kia has unveiled its 2025 Kia EV6 all-electric hatchback, which debuts with updated styling, a larger battery for longer range, and a new infotainment system.

At least, that’s the news for South Korea and Australia, which will apparently be among the first to experience the new model — although it looks like it won’t go on sale “Down Under” until closer to the end of calendar-year 2024. There’s no information yet on it for Canada or the U.S., but until we learn more about our models, here’s what we know for now.

What’s the Kia EV6 all about?

The all-electric Kia EV6 debuted in Canada for 2022, a cousin to the Ioniq 5 made by sister company Hyundai — and that model is redesigned for 2025 as well. The current (no pun intended) 2024 EV6 comes in three trims: the 225-horsepower Wind, in rear-wheel-drive; the 320-horsepower Land with all-wheel-drive; and the top GT trim, also all-wheel-drive and with its two electric motors churning out 576 horsepower and 545 lb-ft of torque.

Depending on the trim and tire size, the EV6 is rated for between 351 and 499 kilometres (218 and 310 miles) of battery range. That 351-km range is for the GT, and that’s a slight bump up from the 332 kilometres (206 miles) it was rated for in the 2023 version (pictured below).

What does the Kia EV6 cost?

A lower-priced base trim level on the 2023 EV6 was phased out, and for 2024, the EV6 in Canada costs between $55,995 and $76,495, before fees and taxes, and before any applicable “green” provincial or federal rebates that may apply. Of course, since we don’t have any information on the 2025 EV6 coming to Canada, we’ll have to wait and see how much it’s going to cost.

What’s new on the 2025 Kia EV6?

The exterior gets new headlights, which bear resemblance to the upcoming EV3 electric crossover that the South Korean automaker has been teasing. The rear lighting is also new, and the lower bumpers have been reworked.

The cabin also gets a gentle makeover with minor tweaks to the instrument cluster and infotainment screens; new buttons for the heated seats and steering wheel; and a fingerprint reader. There’s one of those on the Kia EV9, which lets you use your finger on the reader to start the vehicle or to activate some of its functions.

Other features on the updated 2025 EV6 include a redesigned wireless charger, digital rearview mirror, new steering wheel, second-row side airbags, and updated software for the infotainment system, although exactly what that allows the system to do may depend on the market where the car is sold.

What size battery does the EV6 use?

The 2024 EV6 uses a 77.4-kWh lithium-ion battery, but the 2025 EV6 will swap that out for a new 84-kWh battery pack. That’s now the same battery as in the equally-new 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5, which has been unveiled in its high-performance N version.

What that’ll do to improve the range on the EV6 has yet to be divulged, especially since testing methods differ in various countries, and South Korea or Australian numbers won’t be a match to what Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) or the U.S. EPA publishes. It appears that horsepower and torque numbers will remain the same as with the 2024 models.

We’ll be keeping an eye out for Canadian information on this newest version of the EV6, and will pass along the goods as soon as we know more.

Education

Jil McIntosh graduated from East York Collegiate in Toronto, and then continued her education at the School of Hard Knocks. Her early jobs including driving a taxi in Toronto; and warranty administration in a new-vehicle dealership, where she also held information classes for customers, explaining the inner mechanical workings of vehicles and their features.

Experience

Jil McIntosh is a freelance writer who has been writing for Driving.ca since 2016, but she’s been a professional writer starting when most cars still had carburetors. At the age of eleven, she had a story published in the defunct Toronto Telegram newspaper, for which she was paid $25; given the short length of the story and the dollar’s buying power at the time, that might have been the relatively best-paid piece she’s ever written.

An old-car enthusiast who owns a 1947 Cadillac and 1949 Studebaker truck, she began her writing career crafting stories for antique-car and hot-rod car club magazines. When the Ontario-based newspaper Old Autos started up in 1987, dedicated to the antique-car hobby, she became a columnist starting with its second issue; the newspaper is still around and she still writes for it. Not long after the Toronto Star launched its Wheels section in 1986 – the first Canadian newspaper to include an auto section – she became one of its regular writers. She started out writing feature stories, and then added “new-vehicle reviewer” to her resume in 1999. She stayed with Wheels, in print and later digital as well, until the publication made a cost-cutting decision to shed its freelance writers. She joined Driving.ca the very next day.

In addition to Driving.ca, she writes for industry-focused publications, including Automotive News Canada and Autosphere. Over the years, her automotive work also appeared in such publications as Cars & Parts, Street Rodder, Canadian Hot Rods, AutoTrader, Sharp, Taxi News, Maclean’s, The Chicago Tribune, Forbes Wheels, Canadian Driver, Sympatico Autos, and Reader’s Digest. Her non-automotive work, covering such topics as travel, food and drink, rural living, fountain pen collecting, and celebrity interviews, has appeared in publications including Harrowsmith, Where New Orleans, Pen World, The Book for Men, Rural Delivery, and Gambit.
