How to Make Copycat Harry Potter Butterbeer at Home

During a recent trip to Orlando, I got my first taste of the famous "Butterbeer" from Harry Potter when we were at Universal Studios! Have you ever been to the Wizardry World of Harry Potter before? If you haven't and you are a fan, it is a must for you to visit! What an amazing time!

While were walking around the village, we saw a super cute cart with the word "Butterbeer" on it! Now you know we'd have to stop to see what this was.

Have you ever had Butterbear before? We hadn't but considering all of the people in line for it, we thought it had to be good right?

Oh wow! I knew I was hooked! That alone is worth the trip to Universal Studios! Sweet heaven on earth!

Expert Tips, Ingredient List and Suggestions for Recipe Success

  • Root beer
  • Cream Soda
  • Torani syrup - Butterscotch
  • Salted butter
  • Caramel or Butterscotch ice cream syrup
  • Whipped cream
  • Vanilla ice cream - if you want to make this more of a float, add this in.

What is Butterbeer?

If you are a fan of Harry Potter and you've been to Universaval Orlando, then you already know all about this delicious and creamy drink.

However, if you have only heard of Harry Potter and have no idea what it's about, you have may questions such as:

Is it alcoholic?

Does it really contain beer?

Can it be served as a float?

Why do they reference it in the movie?

In the series, the characters enjoy this buttery beverage when they visit Hog's Head Pub and visit The Three Broomsticks. The movie leads you to believe that they may be a bit tipsy from the drink so there may be a bit of alcohol in the drink they have.

What is Butterbeer Made of?

Butterbeer is a combination of butter, cream, and butterscotch. Since there really isn't an actual recipe out there of this drink. We are doing our best to come up with an actual version of what we think it is.

I have a bit of a habit of always trying to recreate recipes from our vacation when we return home. Sometimes I can come close, sometimes it is way off in left field! After we got home from Orlando, I knew I had to figure out how to make my own version of Butterbeer!

After a few more sips (for science, of course) I found it tasted a little bit like root beer and a little bit like cream soda, so I was pretty sure I had my base flavors down. Two flavors that I figured out that we definitely had to have werereal butter and butterscotch!

To add a little extra magic, we froze some cream soda in star shaped ice trays. It's a great way to keep your ice cream flat cold in the summer heat without losing any of the flavor.

You can serve Butterbeer in any glass you'd like. And you can always find a really cool printable to print off as well for the label for the glass.

Can you Get Butterbeer Ice Cream?

Yes!!! My friends now you can even get your own frozen sweet treat to enjoy and take home! If you are at Universal you can get it and nosh on it while you are there.

However, if you aren't planning a trip there anytime soon, Yuengling's has created their own Butterbeer flavored ice cream, and you can find it at Walmart.

Can you Buy Butterbeer?

Yes, you can! Not only can you find it at Harry Potter World in Universal, but you can also find Flying Cauldron Butterbeer on Amazon. And if you live in the UK, you can order Butterbeer from the Harry Potter Store online.

Who Invented Butterbeer?

It was developed by Steve Jayson and Ric Florell. Even though it's mentioned several times in the HP books. It was never really made into an actual drink until Universal was opening up the themed Harry Potter area. They worked with J.K. Rowling over a couple of years to get the Buttery butterscotch drink recipe just right.

What's in a Starbucks Butterbeer Frappuccino?

I know you just said, what? Of course, this creamy drink is only on their secret menu. But all you need to do is order a Creme Frappuccino and ask your barista for three pumps of toffee nut syrup, three pumps of caramel, and just a drizzle of caramel over the top. And viola, you have a Butterbeer Frappuccino!

Step by Step Directions:

Melt butter in the microwave until a liquid

Stir Torani syrup into the butter until blended

Add the rootbeer and cream soda to a large pitcher

Stir syrup and butter mixture into the soda (do this gingerly to limit fizzing)

Add the ice cream into the glasses/mugs

Pour the drink mixture over the ice cream

Add the ice cubes if you made them<

Top with whip cream, drizzle with the syrup topping and enjoy!

Another way to make this is:

Melt butter in the microwave safe dish until it's a liquid

Add all of the ingredients, except for the syrup and whip cream, into a blender

After everything is mixed together thoroughly, pour into glasses, top with whip cream and the syrup and enjoy!
