Transition Outfits for Summer to Fall (2024)

As the fall season approaches, you don’t necessarily have to put away all your summer pieces quite yet. I know the weather varies, depending on where you live. In Georgia, we have warm weather throughout September and sometimes even into October. So it’s nice to pull items from your spring and summer clothes like denim shorts or a t-shirt and add a layer like a cardigan over the top, for those in-between-season days. Today we’re chatting about how to transition your summer wardrobe into fall outfits. Throughout the post, you’ll see how to style items like jean shorts and white jeans into more fall-ready outfits. I like to play up my accessories this time of year to transition into fall while it’s still hot too.

You’ll also love the blog post where I break down how to dress for fall when it’s still hot.

How to Transition Your Summer Wardrobe into Fall

Trade Bright Colors for Warm and Neutral Tones

An easy way to transition your summer outfits for the fall season is to trade brightly-colored pieces for a warmer color pallet. I love wearing pastels and light and airy colors in my wardrobe. But when fall comes around, I work in a more jewel-toned palette with taupes, grays, soft greens, and burgundies.

This outfit has great transitional pieces. The top is a sweater material with a neutral tone. However, it’s sleeveless, which will keep you cool if it’s still a smidge hot outside. I paired it with white jeans and a neutral bootie to complete the look.

White denim jeans are not just for summer anymore! You can wear white jeans all throughout the year. They’re a great neutral color to build different looks around. The booties can be traded for a sandal or mule too, if the weather isn’t quite ready for a boot.

Wear Boots or Mules with Dresses

Dresses are a big part of my wardrobe throughout the year. When it starts to get cooler, swap your shoes from sandals to more fall-appropriate shoes like boots or mules to help transition my summer wardrobe into fall. If you have summer dresses that you enjoy wearing, then pair a neutral bootie with a dress. A cognac-colored bootie is a beautiful fall color to pair with a variety of outfits throughout the fall and winter seasons.

You could also incorporate a knee-high boot or over-the-knee boot to give your legs more coverage, depending on the temperature. As you get into the October and November months, you can wear a maxi dress with boots too, for an added layer of warmth.

Incorporate Layers into Your Outfits

The evening hours are the first to get extra chilly in the fall. If you’re wearing short sleeves or a tank top, consider adding a denim jacket for an extra layer. I love wearing a bodysuit with shorts throughout the summer. Tip: I rarely snap a bodysuit because I find it a little uncomfortable after a while. So I just tuck them into my pants or shorts. You could also pair a leather jacket with shorts and a tank top or a skirt. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a jacket to add layers to your look either. You can wear a long-sleeved shirt or turtleneck underneath a dress to extend your wear of sleeveless dresses.

For workwear looks, you can add a cardigan over a dress or pair a blazer with a pencil skirt and bodysuit. The options are endless when it comes to adding layers to your looks. If it’s only slightly chilly, short-sleeved ruanas are a great option to give you just enough warmth for those slightly cool weather days.

Trade Straw Hats for Felt or Wall For a Fall Look

Hats add a certain element to any look that completely transforms and elevates it effortlessly. Throughout the summer, I love wearing a straw hat. It acts both as a fashion statement and gives your face extra protection from the sun. However, when fall arrives, I like to switch straw hats for felt. Felt is more of a fall texture and also a bit warmer for the season.

Layer in Fall Textures and Patterns Into Your Wardrobe

My last tip to transition your summer wardrobe into fall is to layer in fall textures. You can switch your straw tote bag or purse for a leather or suede tote. Leather is a great fall texture, especially in deep browns or hunter-greens. You can also wear a leather jacket over the top of dresses or with denim. If you like to wear blazers, a brown plaid blazer is perfect to layer with your workwear outfits.

Another one of my staple items for the fall is a suede mini skirt like this one. Suede has a beautiful fall texture and can work into different outfits. You can also wear a suede jacket if you prefer.

This fall is all about the florals. I prefer floral patterns in neutral color palettes, so it’s easier to style with accessories and layers. I also prefer the floral pattern to have small flowers instead of a big bold pattern.
